Visible Facial Veins and Broken Capillaries

Visible facial veins and broken capillaries are small surface vessels that topical products do not fade. At Skinholic in Surrey and Aldergrove, Nd:YAG & Alexandrite Laser Rejuvenation is designed to target their appearance and Pico Laser Rejuvenation may support surrounding tone. Suitability is confirmed at a free consultation.

Visible facial veins and broken capillaries, often called spider veins, are the thin red or purple thread-like lines on the nose, cheeks or chin that skincare does not fade. For many people the frustration is less about the lines themselves than about the heavier coverage, the head turned slightly away in group photos and the sense that their skin looks more weathered than they feel. This page covers their cosmetic appearance only; anything medical belongs with your doctor.

Skinholic Aesthetics & Laser assesses visible facial veins in person at a free consultation at either our Surrey clinic or our Aldergrove clinic in Langley Township before recommending anything. Nothing is suggested online or over the phone; the plan comes after a practitioner has seen the vessels for themselves.

Why won't these little red lines fade, no matter what you try?

Perhaps you first noticed them in the car mirror on a bright day: a few fine red lines beside one nostril, a faint web across one cheek, a patch of pink that shows through your foundation by mid-afternoon. Maybe you have tried a green-tinted concealer, a colour-correcting primer or a calming serum that promised to take the red down. It may hide them for a few hours, but nothing you put on the surface seems to change what is underneath.

That is the frustrating part. Broken capillaries sit just below the layer that creams and serums reach, so even a careful routine can leave them exactly where they were. Under the flat grey light of a Lower Mainland winter they may seem quieter, then a bright Fraser Valley summer arrives and they look sharper than ever. Every skin is different, too. What worked beautifully for a friend or colleague may not be the right fit for your skin tone, the size of the vessels or the area you want addressed.

That is why we begin with a proper look. At your free consultation, a Skinholic practitioner examines the vessels in person, asks about your history, your skin's sensitivity and what bothers you most, and only then suggests a personalized plan. Cosmetic treatments aim for gradual improvement over a series of sessions with ongoing care in between, rather than an overnight change, and your practitioner will be honest about what may be achievable for your skin.

What do visible facial veins and broken capillaries typically look like?

These describe how the concern commonly looks; they are not a diagnostic checklist. Some people notice one or two of the following; others see several.

  • Fine red, pink or purple threads or branching lines, most often beside the nose, across the cheeks or on the chin
  • A small cluster of lines rather than a single vessel, sometimes set in a slightly rosy area of skin
  • Lines that show most under a ring light or on a video call, and less in soft evening light
  • Vessels that often read more purple around the nostrils and chin, and brighter red across the cheeks
  • A line that briefly fades when pressed with a fingertip, then returns as the pressure lifts
  • Lines that hold their position month after month, unlike a temporary flush that comes and goes

See a physician first. If you notice a mole or spot that is changing, bleeding or new; a sudden cluster of vessels with swelling; persistent facial flushing with burning, stinging, bumps or pustules; persistent inflammation, pain or other symptoms; or anything that concerns you medically, please see your family doctor or a dermatologist first. Skinholic's practitioners support cosmetic appearance only and will refer you if something looks atypical during your assessment.

What might contribute to visible facial veins and broken capillaries?

Several of these often overlap, and none is a verdict on how you have cared for your skin. Commonly cited cosmetic contributors include:

  • Years of sun exposure without daily broad-spectrum protection, often associated with weaker support around small surface vessels
  • Natural aging, as skin can gradually thin and vessels near the surface become easier to see
  • Genetics and skin type; fair, thin or easily flushed skin tends to show vessels more readily
  • Repeated temperature swings, such as hot showers, saunas or stepping from heated rooms into cold winter air
  • Pressure on delicate facial skin from vigorous scrubbing, squeezing blemishes or constant nose-blowing in allergy season
  • Alcohol, spicy food and intense exercise, which can bring on a temporary flush that makes existing vessels stand out
  • Hormonal shifts, including pregnancy, which some people associate with new vessels on the cheeks

Your Skinholic practitioner reviews these factors with you at the consultation, because the mix is different for everyone. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is usually the simplest protective habit; see Why Mineral Sunscreen Belongs in Your Skincare Routine for why a mineral formula is worth considering.

Not sure which option fits?

A free in-person assessment is where every plan starts.

Some clients combine approaches over time, for example vessel-focused sessions followed by toning for the surrounding colour, and your practitioner sequences them so each step supports the next. See the treatment menu for the full treatment menu.

What can you expect when you come in for visible facial veins and broken capillaries?

Your first step is a free consultation at our Surrey clinic on 120 Street or our Aldergrove clinic in Langley Township. Your practitioner examines the vessels closely, often with magnification, notes their colour, size and location, and asks about your history, sensitivity, sun habits and goals. There is no obligation to book anything afterwards.

From there, your plan is personalized. Depending on your skin, the area and what you want to achieve, the practitioner may recommend a single treatment, a sequence of two approaches or a light maintenance rhythm once the initial series is complete. Because laser-based options work with your skin's own response, improvement tends to come in steps across several visits rather than all at once.

Where your skin is sensitive, easily flushed or deeper in tone, a patch test or a gentler first step may be suggested before a full session, so you both know how your skin behaves. Downtime varies: some options involve little more than a few hours of pinkness, while others may bring temporary redness, mild swelling or a short-lived darkening of the treated vessel. All of this, along with prep and aftercare, is explained before you decide.

Before your first visit, see first-visit guide for how to prepare, and browse results gallery for examples of the kinds of changes clients have seen. Individual results vary.

Is a consultation the right next step for you?

The consultation is free, in person and available at both our Surrey and Aldergrove clinics. Think of it as the decision tool: your practitioner assesses your skin and the vessels themselves, asks about your history, goals and lifestyle, walks through the options that may suit you and how they might be sequenced, and gives you room to ask anything, including whether treatment is worth it for your skin at all.

As a reminder, changing moles, unexplained lesions, persistent inflammation or pain, new vessels that arrived suddenly alongside other symptoms, or any medical question should go to your family doctor first; Skinholic refers when something looks atypical.

Costs depend on the treatment, the area being treated, the number of sessions, the level of customization, the practitioner's assessment and your individual goals, and are confirmed at your free consultation; see financing options for payment options. When you are ready, Start Your Skinholic Journey at book a free consultation, or send a question through contact us first.

What to bring or think about before your visit

  • The products you use now, including anything for redness or sensitivity
  • Any previous laser or skin treatments and how your skin reacted
  • What bothers you most, and where on your face
  • Medications or health conditions to mention, so your practitioner can advise or refer
  • A few photos of the vessels taken in daylight and in indoor light

Good to know

Frequently asked questions about visible facial veins and broken capillaries.

Fine red or purple vessels on the face may look less noticeable after laser-based treatment designed to act on the vessel rather than the surrounding skin. How much change is realistic depends on the size and depth of the vessels, your skin type and how it responds, so a Skinholic practitioner assesses them in person first.

Nd:YAG & Alexandrite Laser Rejuvenation (Nd:YAG & Alexandrite Laser Rejuvenation) is the option practitioners tend to reach for when the vessels themselves are the concern, and Pico Laser Rejuvenation may be added later to even out the surrounding tone. Both are facial treatments; leg veins are not on the Skinholic menu, and a physician can advise on those. Which suits you, and in what order, depends on your assessment.

It may be. Wavelength-matched lasers are chosen partly because the wavelength and settings can be adapted to different skin tones and to skin that reacts readily. Rather than assuming, your practitioner examines your skin in person and, where it is deeper in tone or flushes easily, chooses the approach with that in mind. For how the two wavelengths differ, see our article “Nd:YAG or Alexandrite: which laser?”.

Many clients describe a quick snapping or warm sensation during treatment rather than lasting discomfort, and sessions on small facial areas tend to be brief. What follows depends on the option chosen and how reactive your skin is, so ask what your particular plan may involve before booking around a special occasion. Comfort and recovery vary from person to person.

It depends on your assessment. A single fine line on the chin may respond differently from a broader cluster across the cheek, so a short series is more usual than a single visit. Your practitioner outlines a suggested plan and adjusts it as they see how your skin responds, rather than promising a set number up front.

Treated vessels may fade, but new ones can appear over time, particularly if the same contributors are still in play. For that reason some clients choose occasional maintenance sessions, and your practitioner will talk through the everyday habits that help protect whatever improvement you see. What that looks like for you is discussed at your consultation, as there is no set outcome for everyone.

Please see your family doctor or a dermatologist before anything cosmetic. A sudden crop of new vessels, flushing that burns or stings and does not settle, ongoing swelling or pain, or a spot that is changing or bleeding should be assessed by a physician first. Skinholic's practitioners work with cosmetic appearance only, and if anything looks atypical during your assessment they will point you to a physician rather than proceed.

Costs depend on the treatment, the area being treated, the number of sessions, the level of customization, the practitioner's assessment and your individual goals, so they are confirmed at your free consultation rather than quoted online. For payment options, see our financing page. Your practitioner can also explain how a plan for facial vessels is usually structured before you decide.
